Varsity girls tennis drops senior night match to Turner Ashby

Tuesday May 10, the varsity girls tennis team faced off against the Turner Ashby Knights. The match was also senior night featuring the five seniors; Desirae Sandridge, Jeslyn Liu, Lucia Gabel, Madison Horneber and Kim Portillo. The match began with singles. Senior Jeslyn Liu battled her opponent to the end but ultimately gave up the match 10-8. 

One court over, senior Lucia Gabel utilized her strength throughout the match. She consistently was able to place the ball in tough areas and pulled out a 10-6 win.

Senior Madison Horneber’s ability to keep up with opponents has been an advantage to her game. However, her opponent eventually got the upper hand and pulled out a victory over Horneber 11-9.

One of Senior Kim Portillo’s strengths is her power. Portillo uses powerful shots to tire her opponents. The Knights proved to have endurance though and Portillo lost 10-4.

Sophomore Cindy Liu pulled a quick win over her opponent with a score of 10-4. Down on court six, sophomore Clare Kirwan lost her match 10-8. 

Double matches were up next. The first to face off were the pairing of Gabel and Liu. The pair has proven effective as they have seen success at other matches. This trend continued today, as they quickly won 10-4.

Horneber and Portillo were the next doubles pair. They were quickly overtaken by the Knights and lost 10-3.

As the match reached the end, the last pair, Kirwan and sophomore Sophia Pimentel-Yoder, began their match. The fans and players gathered around to cheer on Kirwan and Pimentel-Yoder. The two battled with one last swing, and pulled out a 10-8 victory. The streaks lost the match 5-4.
