Opinion: “Happy Feet 2” an entertaining, family-friendly film

Happy Feet 2 is in 3D, like many movies these days.

Every Thanksgiving, the uncles and cousins in my family go out to a movie at Regal Cinemas while the aunts and moms stay at the house to cook and get ready for the days’ festivities.  The movie is usually PG or kid friendly (I have some younger cousins) and most of the time it’s animated.  To give you an idea of the kinds of films we’ve seen each year, here are just a couple: A Christmas Carol, The Incredibles, Happy Feet, etc.

This year we all went to see Happy Feet 2.  Personally, I was very skeptical.  I was not a big fan of the first Happy Feet, for its only redeeming factors were the singing and dancing.  There were other animated flicks that looked more promising such as The Muppets and Arthur Christmas.

It was a relief to be pleasantly surprised.  The plot and storyline were fairly unrealistic, but it focused a lot more on the penguins and other animals in their habitat, rather than humans and zoos.  I also loved the music and dancing in this movie.  The characters like Ramon (played by Robin Williams), the krill Will (Brad Pitt) and Bill (Matt Damon), and Atticus (Lil P-Nut) gave the show the humor it needed to be entertaining.  The voice of the main character Mumbo’s (Elijah Wood) son, Erik (Ava Acres) was totally unexpected, and a nice change from the usual in the movie.

Overall, the movie was funny and entertaining, and a cute movie to watch on Thanksgiving with your cousins.  But if you’re looking for something with action, something that will make you think, something with a unique story line or plot, this is not your kind of movie.
