For the very first time in the history of Harrisonburg High School, ECMC provided a way for the high school to provide students a way to learn about college. The counseling center lead the presentation as it displayed facts about scholarships, how to fill out an application, average tuition costs, and much more. ECMC also gave out four $500 scholarships to senior Kathy Flores, freshman Fernando Varela, senior Joshua Storella and junior Facundo Cabrera, whose names pulled from a drawing, could possibly cover a semester of books in college. The college night was full of information for any students that are looking into taking their education to the next level.

Senior Jasmyn Arrington found the event very helpful for learning about scholarships. Since she is looking at schools about an hour or two away from home she will have the extra expense of living on campus, so scholarships are extremely important for her.

“I learned that there is a scholarship for everyone. There is money everywhere floating around just waiting to be caught,” Arrington said.

Arrington came to gain knowledge about the opportunities to prepare for college and for a chance to win the $500 scholarship.

“I enjoyed it. I learned a lot and will definitely use it in my scholarship application process,” Arrington said.

Senior Danielle Yutzy came to the college night to learn more about what to do to prepare for college. Being in the middle of college applications she wanted to know that she was doing all that she needed to.

“I came to learn how to fill out financial aid and scholarships, and of course, the pizza and a chance to win $500,” Yutzy said.

Scholarships are very important to Yutzy and she is looking for every opportunity to help cover her college tuition.

“I enjoyed my experience. I got to learn more things about how I can prepare for college and I learned about the Lee-Jackson Scholarship. I also found out that to continue to receive money from FASFA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid), I will have to fill it out every year. It was all very helpful,” Yutzy said.
