The HHS Marching Blue Streak Band swept their competition on Saturday, Sept. 26th. The band came home with first place trophies in every category, as well as the overall grand champion trophy for classes 3 and 4A. One of the seven trophies the band came home with was for first place color guard.

Before the competition began color guard captains senior Hannah Tyler and junior Megan Labarge were confident in their team.

“We’re pretty confident. It has been pretty interesting with all the changes going on, but I think it’s going to be really good. We have a lot more to put in the show, a lot to change so I’m pretty excited.” said Tyler.

This was the band’s first competition in which awards were given.

“I think everyone, especially in the color guard, is really excited to perform and show all the hard work they’ve been doing…They’re really excited to keep performing and to keep showing people what they can do,” said Labarge.

The color guard twirls flags and rifles during the marching band show, adding a different visual element than is given by the band itself. They smile through the whole thing as they are required to perform with grace and joy.

“…As with any marching band, you spend so much time with all these people, like an abnormal amount of time with all these people…and that, again, establishes connections that last throughout the school year and throughout the rest of your life…it makes a lot of memories,” Labarge said.

Despite their smiles, Tyler says that it isn’t as easy as it might look.

“It’s a lot of commitment but it’s something that doesn’t teach you something that you just need to know, it’s something that you’ll learn…the things that you take from it you’ll learn and like, do in life,” Tyler said.

The band and color guard will be competing again at Liberty University next Saturday, Oct. 3rd.
