Harrisonburg High School senior Allison McGranahan practices her prepared pieces while waiting to be called up to audition. “It’s pretty nerve-racking waiting in line because they make us wait so long, so by the time you get in there, you’ve been waiting and practicing over and over, and you’ve probably made a few mistakes, so you’re like ‘Oh, my gosh, what if I do that in the auditions?’. In the past years, I was a lot more nervous because I was more focused on violin, but this year I switched my focus over to playing clarinet a little more, so it’s not as nerve-racking because this one’s not as big of a deal to me,” McGranahan said.

Eastern Mennonite High School 9th grader Ada Zhang rehearses her scales while waiting for her audition to begin. “I’m nervous. I practiced a lot, so I think I’m prepared as much as I can be, so to be honest, if I don’t make it in, I’m prepared to know that I won’t make it in and I won’t be that devastated. [I think the most nerve-racking part about today is] the sight reading. I hear it’s brutal,” Zhang said. This is her first time auditioning but has experience with blind judges. “I think [having blind judges] does make a difference because sometimes, you can also tell whether a player is good or not by their posture, so that definitely makes a difference,” Zhang said

Collegiate School sophomore Georgia Vaughn and junior Jasmine Harper rehearse their prepared pieces while waiting for their audition. “[I auditioned today] because it’s required by my school, but I also really like playing the violin. [The most nerve-racking thing about the audition is] probably those people that always show off before we audition. I think just not being nervous is the most important part. Then you can be relaxed and play the best,” said Harper.

Parent volunteers Anne Knox (right) and Dekoven Pelton (left) of Charlottesville High School students help pass out audition numbers to violinists from all over the district. “We are helping to assign the audition numbers for the violin participants. We have had 98 people so far and there could be 105. We started this morning at 8:00 am. [The hardest part about the job is] when the students don’t have the necessary paperwork, or there is a problem with their paperwork, and they have to wait for it to get sorted out,” Knox said.
