The annual 2025 volleyball game went underway last week. The seniors played the freshmen and sophomores played the juniors. Three freshmen took advantage of this opportunity and signed up right away. Leonel Ballen Batista, Jacob Mejia Reyes, and Jonas Norment all headlined the freshmen team.
In middle school, there is an option to play boys volleyball. In high school that is not an option. The powderpuff game can be a way for boys to play an organized game of volleyball.
“There’s not very many options for boys to play volleyball in high school. There’s basically none. So it was really fun to be able to play an organized game of volleyball,” Norment said.
The freshmen have never beat the seniors. In the first set, the freshmen came within one point of beating the seniors.
“[My favorite part was] the competition. I mean, we got to face the seniors, and we almost beat them, so that was pretty cool,” Mejia Reyes said.
Ballen Batista also enjoyed to competitiveness of the game.
“I enjoyed how close we came in the game and how we almost beat the seniors. Mostly because I thought we were gonna lose really badly, and seeing that we almost beat them was very fun,” Ballen Batista said.
All three of these freshmen played volleyball in middle school so they showed off their skills that they learned from middle school.
“[I played] definitely not my best, but I’ll come back next year, better than ever,” Ballen Batista said.
Norment, on the other hand, thought differently.
“I think I played pretty well. I’m a little rusty, sometimes I just need to put a little bit of oil on the rust. I played pretty well because we were playing against seniors, so it’s no joke. They’re the real deal. So, when they’re out there serving, it’s a little bit nerve-racking to be returning those serves, but I think I gave it 100 percent, and that’s all I can do,” Norment said.
This was the freshmen first homecoming experience. Including the homecoming games, spirit week, and dance.
“I thought it was cool. It was fun to walk around the hallways and see other people’s outfits,” Norment said.
Mejia Reyes also thought the homecoming experience was positive.
“Pretty good. If I was going to rate it one to ten probably an eight of ten. I participated a lot. So I’d definitely give it an A plus,” Mejia Reyes said.
