The gymnastics team competed in their final home meet of the season Jan. 22, finishing 4th out of the 5 schools competing. It was an exciting moment for senior Michelle Segarra who was honored before the event for her last ever home meet.
“It felt really good to see her get honored because I don’t really think of her as a senior, I think of her as just one of my friends, one of my teammates, so it was really good to see her up there acting like a senior, surprising, but also very encouraging,” freshman Rachel Coffman stated.
The team competed on the 25th and had 6 days to prepare before heading to North Mountain Gymnastics today to compete in the district championship which will also include Broadway, Turner Ashby, East Rockingham and Spotswood.
Freshman Danica Doberstein didn’t feel any different even with it being the last home meet of the season.”
It just felt like another meet. it was fun. I love doing it. I love the people that do it with me,” Doberstein said.
Harrisonburg will also be competing in the Regional Championships on Feb. 1 at Stone Bridge High School.
With these championships coming up, the members of the team are having different feelings about getting prepared.
“We practice every day, two hours. It’s always nice, I love our coach. He tries to keep it kind of calm and not super uptight, but obviously we’re still practicing to do our best,” Doberstein said.
While Doberstein isn’t feeling any different heading into the weekend, her teammate Coffman is a little more antsy. “I do feel really nervous about that [championships], unfortunately I can’t go because I have a JROTC event, but if I were to go I think I’d be pretty nervous,” Coffman said.
Although the team will be losing a key member with Segarra graduating after this season, both Coffman and Doberstein have already stated that they want to continue and will be returning next year.
“I really enjoy it and I plan on doing gymnastics all of high school,” Doberstein said.
