Movie Review: “The Host” is an accurate portrayal of its book

"The Host" is unlike other movies in its genre.
“The Host” is unlike other movies in its genre.
I must admit, I went into the theater on Sunday a bit hesitant about the movie I was about to see. The Host, originally a book by the Twilight darling, Stephanie Meyer, I had high expectations. Needless to say, this novel was actually worth reading.

The Host is a very interesting take on the future with humans only hosts for other beings called “souls.” The story follows Wanderer, a soul in the body of Melanie Stryder, but unlike other humans, Melanie doesn’t give up her body and Wanderer and Melanie must learn to live together in one mind.
Saoirse Ronan did a wonderful job portraying the kind-hearted Wanderer battling tough Melanie. Though the character was not very interesting, or unpredictable, I still had fun watching her, and unlike other very one-dimensional characters, I never grew annoyed with her.

Of course, the love interests in the movie were attractive. I had absolutely no problem with that. Jared Howe, Melanie’s lover, and Ian O’Shea, Wanderer’s man, were able to understand the awkward situation where the beings they loved shared the same body. It was a nice change from the “let’s beat each other up to look manly” approach.

All in all, the movie was very satisfying, particularly how well the movie followed the original plot of the book. I always hate it when the movie deviates from the original story. Stephenie Meyer actually produced the movie, so it would make sense it was more than just similar to the book.

I’d say the movie was well done with strong characters and a strong plot. If you like a different look at the future of our world, mixed in with a love story, and action in the middle, this movie is worth seeing.
