Shenandoah Bicycle Company has brought a new organic delicacy to downtown Harrisonburg – Pulp. The smoothie restaurant has sat inside of the bike shop for almost three years, but hasn’t gained popularity until recently.
Worker Kyle Lawrence has been with the bike shop since it first opened, and helps run Pulp.
“We haven’t done much advertising, we just let our bike customers get the word around town. Our business has been pretty steady, and recently started increasing. [The Pulp owners] think that we’ll be pretty popular by the summer,” Lawrence said.
With the new year came the resolutions to stay fit and eat healthy, and Pulp makes those dieting and exercise commitments much more bearable.
The shop’s signature item is the açaí bowl, which consists of what seems like a thick fruit smoothie. What gets health nuts raving is the main ingredient, the açaí berry. The berry is known to be one of the healthiest foods on the earth, considering it contains more antioxidants than any other fruit.
Besides how healthy the food is, the shop also offers a wide variety for all different taste palettes. Customers can choose two other fruits to blend in with the açaí berries, and then choose from a variety of milks, including coconut and almond milk. Numerous toppings are available for an extra cost.
The smoothies and açaí bowls at Pulp blow businesses like Smoothie King, Sweet Bee, and Sweet Frog out of the water. The food is much healthier, and provides an organic kick that no other shop can accomplish.
The only downside to Pulp is the price of its products. With the açaí bowl costing over seven dollars, it’s definitely more of a ‘special occasion’ shop then an everyday stop. Also, the customer feels like they should limit their choice of toppings, since every item from honey to granola costs an extra 50 cents.
“Some customers are a little skeptical about the cost when they first come here, but we never hear complaints after they actually try [the açaí bowl]. The berries are pretty expensive, and are really healthy, so it makes up for the money,” Lawrence said.
Even though it is a bit pricey, the serving size makes up for the cost. This frozen treat will have no problem satisfying its customer’s cravings and persuading them to keep up their healthy habits.

I really like pulp, but I’ve always thought it was a little too expensive to compete with other places. It’s really really good though, which makes it worth it
