Bruno Mar’s new album, Unorthodox Jukebox, is one of the best pop albums I’ve heard in a long time.

The most famous track from the album is probably “Locked out of Heaven”. The song has been played over and over and over on the radio, which is probably why it’s not my favorite. Even so, the beat’s good.

Call me a hipster (or maybe a wanna-be hipster; this is Bruno Mars I’m writing about), but I always liked the songs that didn’t get as popular. Maybe that’s because the radio doesn’t play them nine-million times a day, or maybe it’s because I like name-dropping them and feeling accomplished. Either way, my favorite songs from the album are as follows.

“Natalie”, for starters, is a pretty angry song about a girl who used him for either his fame or his money. I think Mars does better with slightly bitter songs, bringing me to my next favorite, “Money Make her Smile”, which is about a girl (again) who, uh, likes money a little too much. I think I’m starting to see a theme here.

Aside from the bitter gold-digging songs, “When I Was Your Man” never fails to make me slightly depressed. In a good way. The lyrics combined with the power chords hit underneath just make for one sad song.

“Treasure” is one of those songs that I wish I didn’t like, but I do. I’ll admit, I’m a sucker for songs telling you how amazing you are. “Treasure” isn’t something I’ve heard a girl compared to in a song yet, so that was new.

I thought the album was impressive. It was slightly retro, with the music videos being faded and crackly like old television, and the notes of the music just having an old feel to them. I guess that’s one of the main reasons I like it, since usually the music on the radio doesn’t impress me (there I go being fake-hipster again). I highly recommend it, to anyone.
