Opinion: Gangnam Style is getting old

The song is accompanied by the infamous dance.
Everyone knows about Gangnam Style. It’s been a hit for awhile now, and it consists mostly of Korean pop star Psy doing that infamous dance and singing that infamous song. Sure, when it first came out, I myself, like almost everyone else, thought it was reasonably amusing, and even kind of funny.

But now that this darn video has been viral for well over a month, I’m pretty sick of it to be honest. Especially that it’s been played on the radio. Just, no.

When you really think about it, what is it about this video that deserves over a billion views? I mean a majority of the people listening to it don’t even understand the words. Not only this, but it’s not like it’s a really amazing example of fine music. It definitely sounds electronic, and what with no one being able to know what it means, it’s not like people are getting some deep emotional meaning from the lyrics.

So then why are we still hearing things about a song that has been called everything from sensational to a sign of the apocalypse? The only things I could come up with to explain the long-lived popularity include the fact that it’s catchy and it has a dance to go with it. Like all the other uber-popular videos; “Friday” on the catchy front, and “Teach Me How to Dougie” on the dance front.

Either way, I seriously think that the buzz about this song needs to stop. It was fun for a while, but a girl can only hear it so many times.
