Opinion: Being sick just doesn’t fly

It’s amazing the wonders that soup can do when you’re sick.
It’s amazing the wonders that soup can do when you’re sick.

For the first three days of this week I got the extreme pleasure of being sick enough to not come to school. This included lots of laying around, sneezing, and eating chicken soup. There are so, so, so many things wrong with being sick.

First of all, every time I do get sick, my mom makes me go to the doctor. The doctor is quite possibly the last place you would ever want to be when you’re sick. You have to leave your bed, and you have to make yourself mildly presentable. After all of this lovely stuff, you get to be judged by a doctor, and you’re told everything that’s wrong with you. Meaning no disrespect, I mean I always feel better afterwards. Just definitely not during.

Secondly, it’s so weird that even when you’re not there, school goes on. People continue on their way. It’s really irrational, but there’s always a small part of me that thinks all my friends can’t get by without me. Not to mention, the extreme amount of make-up work you get when you return. I also got the added bonus of a test the day after I got back.

Third, you have to be sick when you’re sick. That means, even though you don’t have to go to school, you can’t enjoy it. You’re stuck, unable to do anything in your house. It’s unbelievably boring, and you feel gross 98% of the time.

Of course, as with anything, there’s always an upside. Even if you can’t enjoy it, you still get to stay home and watch movies and drink orange juice. For the first few days, anything seems better than school. It’s only after the second – at least for me – day that I started to get tired of movies and actually physically hate orange juice.

All in all, I’m happy I’m better. It was nice to have a break, but I can’t deal with being sick.
