Speaker Kevin McCarthy launched an impeachment inquiry on President Joe Biden regarding Biden’s connection to his son, Hunter Biden’s, business dealings. Biden released his first remarks at a Democratic campaign in McLean, VA. He dismisses the House Republicans impeachment inquiry.
“The best I can tell is they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government,” Biden said during the campaign.
An impeachment inquiry investigates any harm a federal official may have committed. In Biden’s case, the House Republicans believe Biden relieved his son from possible legal strain by pressuring Ukraine to remove its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, to stop an investigation on the gas company Burisma, which he was on the board while Biden was vice president. The House Republicans use information like this to push Biden’s impeachment.
In response to the impeachment inquiry, the White House sent a 14-page memo to the media. In this memo, the White House called the allegations “unverified claims” and “actively disproven”. To its full, this memo was titled “It’s Time For The Media To Do More To Scrutinize House Republicans’ Demonstrably False Claims That They’re Basing Impeachment Stunt On” and was written by White House Counsel’s Office Spokesman Ian Sams. Sams refutes seven of Republicans claims supporting Biden’s impeachment inquiry.
