Review: “Mirror, Mirror” a disappointment

Review: Mirror, Mirror a disappointment
Mirror, Mirror was released to theaters on March 30th.

For most of my formative years I had an absolutely crippling obsession with Disney princesses. An obsession of this strength never seems to completely die off, so I was excited to go see Mirror, Mirror, the new adaptation of the Snow White tale, starring Julia Roberts, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, and Nathan Lane.

The movie did not live up to my expectations. For one thing, I have definitely seen Julia Roberts (who played the evil queen) act better. She never seemed to be able to decide if she had a British accent or not, so she waffled back and forth in this weird space between England and America.

Snow White’s character was a pretty typical princess. Near the end of the movie she made some speech about how “the prince was always saving the princess and that should change”, but the sudden show of feminism didn’t cover up the fact that earlier on, her main talents had been cleaning and conjuring perfect meals out of thin air. She also had the peculiar habit having bare shoulders when it was snowing outside- I would have been totally unsurprised if the movie resolved itself by having her quite suddenly die of frostbite.

The plot had a few holes, and didn’t really add much to the fairy tale. To remake a story that everybody knows like the back of their hand, you have to have more than a few big names.

However, the movie did excel visually. The costumes, sets, and scenery were beautiful and perfectly detailed. If you watched the movie without the sound, you might be quite impressed. If you prefer movies that are entertaining to watch and listen to, I suggest watching something other than Mirror, Mirror.
