I was definitely surprised with the Academy’s decisions this year for the Oscars. First of all, The Artist, a black and white, silent movie, won for Best Picture, which I didn’t suspect at all. I thought a movie like Moneyball or The Descendants, which had major actors in them like Brad Pitt and George Clooney, would win. But no, a silent film won, which hasn’t happened since Wings won it in 1929. But I’m okay with The Artist winning, even if it wasn’t the one I predicted.
In the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, it was thought George Clooney or Brad Pitt would take home the golden statue but instead a rising French actor, Jean Dujardin, won it for The Artist. I think it’s good that a lesser known actor gets the Oscar for once so I’m pleased that he was the Academy’s choice. Meryl Streep won for Best Actress in a Leading Role and I wasn’t surprised with that at all.
I wasn’t sure who would win in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category. I wanted Jonah Hill to win mostly because he was the only nominee that I knew. Christopher Plummer ended up winning, though. But I’m so that Octavia Spencer won for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role because I excited saw The Help and loved it so I wanted at least one person from it to win. I think Melissa McCarthy is hilarious, but I like Octavia Spencer more.
Someone also showed me the animated short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, and I loved it. I totally recommend you to look it up and watch it. It won in the Animated Short Film category so I was happy about that. Even though I didn’t expect some of the winners, I’m okay with them.
