Opinion: “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”

I recently went to see the movie Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, and having been a big fan of the first one, I had high expectations. The preview also builds up the movie to a crazy extent, featuring explosions, multiple disguises, and the good ol’ Robert Downey Jr. charm. The first movie follows the mystery-solving adventures of Sherlock Holmes and partner Dr. Watson (Jude Law). Although Watson was engaged at the end of the first movie and you think he’s down for count, he finds his place again by Holmes’ side in the 2nd movie.

When the second movie starts *spoiler alert* you are met by the very sudden and unsuspected death of the love of Holmes’ life, Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams). The movie continues in the usual Holmes fashion with crazy plans, brilliant action, and my favorite, the foretold slowmo fighting scenes. Just like in the 1st movie, I thought I had it figured out by the end, and was proved wrong. You have to take into account the little side observations that are sure to add to the story’s conclusion. In this movie *spoiler alert* it turns out to be an oxygen pump.

By the end of the movie I had dubbed it a let down, lesser than the first, not worth the $10 entry fee (good thing I had a free movie pass) and an overall disappointment… good thing I stayed for the last two minutes. The twist that I should have learned to expect in any good mystery movie redeemed the whole thing for me. If you’re a fan of mysteries, action, and a laugh, it’s a movie for you.
