Opinion: Gay marriage ought to be allowed in the U.S.

Opinion%3A+Gay+marriage+ought+to+be+allowed+in+the+U.S.
This sign was used to protest against Proposition 8 one year ago.

The Huffington Post is reporting that the California Supreme court overturned Prop 8, which banned gay marriage in the state of California. This landmark ruling promises to create a national stir. The US Supreme Court is going to have to make a decision about gay marriage sooner rather than later. I just hope they make the right decision.

More states allow you to marry your first cousin than someone of the same sex. For the record, if someone is your first cousin, you share grandparents. (I guess dealing with the in-laws would be easier.) The general consensus in this country is that first cousin marriage is deviant. Yet, more states allow that than gay marriage, which has zero incestuous undertones.

Many people are anti-gay marriage because the bible is against it. Those people seem to forget that in America, we have freedom of  religion and from religion. So what the bible says should have no impact on national laws because not everyone is Judeao-Christian! “The bible says so” is the weakest legal argument. Do you know what else the bible says? No shellfish and no polyester. Yet we still have red lobster and sports jerseys. I am NOT saying we should disregard religious texts, I’m saying they should not be the basis for laws in secular nations.

Besides, if two people love each other they should be able to get married. Laws that are outdated need to change. If Virginia was still going by the same laws they had in the 1960’s, I wouldn’t be able to exist. My parents, an interracial couple, wouldn’t have been able to get married and I would’ve been shunned like a leper. We should choose love and acceptance instead of hate. Hate isn’t healthy.

So good for you, California. Good on you for letting people love and marry and be able to start families and create stable households. I hope the rest of the nation will follow suit.

I completely and totally agree. It’s about time we extend equal rights to all Americans, not just the majority.
