Changing Spirit Week posters shows disrespect

The ideas of what to do during the five days have changed from year to year. New trends have been set and new interests in teens have changed. Similar to this, something else has been changed; the spirit week posters in the hallways.

The Student Council Association (SCA) is a group of nominated students that coordinate student activities in the school. The events range from pep rallies to setting up homecoming dance. Students come in around 6:35 a.m. to plan events and voice student opinions. These students put an immense amount of effort and patience on the table to make things run smoothly.

As a student, your voice can be heard in many ways. The correct way may be speaking to a teacher or any staff member in the school that has authority to pass on your idea for approval. Another way could be gathering a group of students to speak to an SCA representative. In the past week, I feel like students have been very disrespectful and have immaturely promoted their ideas on social media platforms. Screenshotting stories on Snapchat and speaking badly about SCA representatives is not the best way to get your spirit days changed.

Posters were put up in the hallways with the title changed to “Our New Spirit Week.” The first thing that caught my eye was the emphasis on the first word in that title. Why are students trying to rebel and divide over the smallest issue in this school?

Spirit week is supposed to be one of the best weeks leading up to homecoming game and the dance itself. I believe that this definitely shouldn’t be focused on the most important thing going on in school, because it isn’t.

In the future, decisions like these should be made easier within students. Putting a Google Form on the HHS homepage in advance should solve this unnecessary drama that this year’s spirit week had.
