Opinion: New season provides exciting opportunities for Redskins
May 27, 2016
As a Washington Redskins fan, I am very much looking forward to the 2016-2017 NFL season. The amount of players that the Skins have picked up since last season will help the Redskins win back-to-back NFC East championships.
There is no doubt that the Redskins weakest defensive link was the defensive back position. Before last season I could have named the starting lineup for you every game, but last year I saw players on the field I had never heard of in my life.
My phone screen lit up with over twenty notifications from Twitter on April 22 informing me that Josh Norman was now a Washington Redskin. The former Carolina Panther cornerback signed with the Redskins for a five year, 75 million dollar deal that will assist the Redskins defense greatly as he plays alongside the experienced Redskin safety DeAngelo Hall.
The draft for the Skins was a great success as they took Josh Doctson in the first round after trading down a spot to the 22nd pick. That trade gives Washington another seventh round pick in 2017. Doctson is a wide receiver from Texas Christian University whose stats were outstanding. He is taller than all of the current Redskins receivers at 6’2” so he will already be able to come down with more 50-50 balls. Another reason Washington went with a WR in the first round is because both DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon will have contracts ending after this season and it is likely that only one will be resigned considering they are both 29, so Doctson will be an immediate solution to that issue next year.
The depth that the Redskins lacked last year on defense has been fixed, the quarterback position has been filled, the wide receiver position is extremely strong and a defensive standout has been added in the backfield, it is a perfect recipe for a winning football team.
