Spring play gives theatrical opportunity for drama kids after musical

After musical wraps up, theater geeks can still participate in drama by auditioning for the spring play. The spring play is unique in many ways because it is the only regular play that gets performed during the school year, the other productions being the competition One Act piece and the musical. The play this year is called “The Wizard, the Witch, the Fairy, the Squirrel, and The Soft Fuzzy Slippers of Doom” . The spring play is also special because every year for seven years Bradley Walton, the school librarian, has written a new play to debut at HHS.

Auditions for the play will be held on  Wednesday Feb. 26.Audition packets are available in the library for anyone who wants to audition.

“I put all the audition information into a packet for the students including monologues and students need to show up with a memorized monologue and need to be prepared to read another monologue. They also need to be prepared for the possibility of reading additional monologues. They need to have all the paperwork filled out,” said Walton.

Walton has certain criteria that he looks for in students who audition.

“I look for volume, energy level, and just being interesting. If there’s something that captures my attention during an audition, then that’s a good thing. I’ve found in the past that an audition where someone screws up but is interesting is better than a perfect audition that’s mediocre,” said Walton.

Walton came up with the idea for the play with some help from his daughter.

“It was originally a story that my daughter wrote for her sixth grade English class last year. They were assigned to write a short novel over the course of a semester. I liked it and I thought it was cute so I decided to write a play based off of it,” said Walton.

Senior Daelyn McCleve has participated in the spring plays for the past couple of years and is planning on auditioning this year.

“I’m pretty excited for the show. I’ve read the script and it’s really fun,” said McCleve.

McCleve enjoys the audition process for the spring play because it is different from auditioning for other productions.

“The auditions for the Spring Play are fun, there isn’t that much competition and it’s very relaxed and informal,” said McCleve

The show will open on April 18 at 7 pm and on April 19 at 3 pm.
