Junior Michelle Waligora gets ready to play singles.

The varsity girls HHS tennis squad has one main goal: to finish their season first in the district. Based on their performances so far, their goal is definitely in sight. Earlier this week the Streaks took on and defeated the Leemen of Robert E. Lee High School.

Junior Lucy Rose, senior Lydia Hatfield, junior Michelle Waligora, and senior Lindsey Halling all came out with a win in their singles matches. Doubles partners Sarah Rose and Gina Muan, Lucy Rose and Michelle Waligora, and Lydia Hatfield and Madeline Culbreth all won in doubles, ending in a 7-2 victory for the Streaks.

The ladies have a 5-0 record in the district so far, and plan to keep up their undefeated streak.

“Our initial goal was to come in first in the district, and right now we are undefeated. I think we will be able to keep it up,” Lucy Rose said.

Rose and Waligora also have an opportunity to go to regionals in doubles. The regional tournament consists is made up of the top two seeds in singles, and the top seed in doubles from each team. The region will also take the runner up doubles team from each district. If Rose and Waligora win their matches tomorrow and next week, they will be the seed two team and advance to regionals.

The tennis team will play again on Thursday the 17th at Broadway and the Friday 18th at home, against Waynesboro.

“I’m excited for the rest of the season and I’m proud of our team and how we have done so far,” Lucy Rose said.
