Sophomore Brooke Cobb has been competing in gymnastics and tumbling since she was five, and is now going to states this weekend – February 16-17 – at Centerville High School in Fairfax County, VA. She will be the only gymnast competing in states for HHS, and will be performing in three events.

“For states I just am going to try and go have a really good time and get really good scores. I went last year and I saw how good the girls were so I’m not really expecting anything great,” Cobb said.

There wasn’t a district competition this year for gymnastics, but in regionals Cobb placed 5th all around, placing 4th in vault, 5th on uneven bars, and 7th on floor. To go to states, you have to place in the top eight in regionals. In the regular season, Cobb placed top 5 in most everything, if not top 3. She has been the most consistently placing gymnast for HHS.

“I do all the events, including uneven bars, the beam, the floor and the vault. My favorite is probably the floor, because you can just do your own thing and I really enjoy it,” Cobb said.

Cobb has been involved with gymnastics since she was very young.

“I’ve been competing with the high school since last year, but I’ve been competing with gymnastics since I was five. I used to go to this Club Gym where we went to far away competitions, but it had nothing to do with school,” Cobb said.

While in season, Cobb practices two hours every day of the week. Out of season, she practices most weekends to always be improving and getting better.

“I regret stopping gymnastics in middle school. Back then, I was as good as I am now, but I guess I just got tired of it, so I stopped for three years and then I started again last year. If I would’ve kept going, I would’ve been a lot better now,” Cobb said.

Cobb plans to continue on with her gymnastics career up until her senior year and maybe even in college.

“College gymnastics is a big possibility for me. I want to keep going to regionals and states up until my senior year, and I just hope to keep getting better and placing well in the future,” Cobb said.
