District Chorus took place down the road at Turner Ashby High School.  The singers missed their 2nd, 3rd and 4th block classes Friday to drive to TA and practice for their concert on Saturday.  The music was given to choir director Bethany Houff soon after the results of the participants were announced.  Since November the choirs have been working on this music so as to be prepared for this past weekend.

“I feel like the weekend included a lot of practicing which can be tiring, but in the end we make an amazing sound.  I definitely learned more technical terms and the conductor was great!  I loved that he told us stories about his childhood that pertained to music,” sophomore Isabelle Burden said.

“District Choir was long and tiring, but the finished product made it so worth it,” senior Nancy Carrie Logan said,

Another big part of this weekend is the All-State Audition.  All-State is the next level of competition for those music students wishing to receive the most distinguished honor of being selected to join the All-State Chorus.  From the district, only 4 men from each vocal part – tenor and bass – and 8 women from each vocal part – alto and soprano – are chosen to sing in the All-State Choir.  For those of you who aren’t Fine Arts’ Gurus, All-State Chorus is like an All-Star team or All-State honor for athletics.

The concert took place on Saturday at 5 p.m. and HHS students seniors Kirsten Ferguson (named #1 soprano overall), Nancy Carrie Logan, Maggie Siciliano, Alex Hunter-Nickels, Sam St. Ours, Kaelyn Warne and junior Abe Nouri were chosen to be a part of the All-State Chorus, and senior Caitlin Kelley and junior Garrett Thompson were chosen as alternates.

“It’s definitely exciting that I got in.  I was pretty happy about it.  The event sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun,” Nouri said.

“I’m really excited about making All-State Chorus!  I think it is a great opportunity for someone who is looking at a career in performing, like me.  It is going to be a great experience to be with people who love music as much as me.  It’s another thing that will make my senior year so special,” Logan said.

Because she was too young, sophomore Caroline Shank couldn’t audition for All-State Chorus, but the conductor of the program selected her to sing a duet for the concert. It was a successful weekend of singing and performance for HHS and the district’s choirs.
