This year, our HHS fine arts programs have been doing exceedingly well, with our One Act winning states and Thoroughly Modern Millie coming just around the corner. Next school year, 2013-2014, a new fine arts academy is coming to HHS for current 8th and 9th graders. The program will include six different strands of learning, including choral music, creative writing, dance, dramatic arts, instrumental music, and visual arts. Students interested in those fields of learning are especially encouraged to apply for the program.

Freshman Jaymie Inouye is most likely going to apply for the academy.

“I’ve always been really into fine arts, and I’m probably going to pursue something fine arts related in college and as a career,” Inouye said.

Freshman Mary Hallet Culbreth is interested in the academy for other reasons.

“I think I’m going to do the academy, but instead of doing a fine arts career, I will probably just do something on the side in college,” Culbreth said.

The Fine Arts Academy includes one class with all the people in the program, and about two other elective classes that focus on the specialized strand you are involved in, with some people from the program and some people who just take that class normally.

“I will probably want to do drama as my main strand, and if I do another strand, it will have to be either choral music or dance,” Inouye said.

Freshman Michelle Eckstein is not yet sure about her application to the academy, but thinks it is a neat opportunity for students really interested in pursuing fine arts.

“I think it’s really cool to have a whole class just for talking about the different aspects of fine arts with all the students who are really interested. It’s a nice opportunity to not just focus on your strand of interest, but also see what’s going on with the other strands as well. I’m going to apply for it, but I am not sure if I will do it or not yet,” Eckstein said.

This program is based toward students already enrolled in some fine arts classes, or with a unique interest in singing, dancing, or drama, but any student can apply for the program. There was a meeting for those who were interested to learn more about the program on January 15th at 7 p.m. in the Thomas Harrison Forum.

“I am really interested in this opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to it. I think it should be a great program,” Inouye said.

I think this is really well written. I applied for fine arts too, so it’s interesting to hear about other people’s opinions of it
