Fashion trends change every spring and fall when designers come out with new lines. Multiple clothing items have been popular within the past few years like TOMS, Northface jackets, Sperry Top-Siders, cowboy boots, leggings…the list goes on and on.
Peplum has been popping up frequently in clothing stores. The small, yet noticeable, ruffle has become a common fashion statement on dresses and tops. Although the trend actually started in the spring of 2012, it didn’t hit common clothing stores like Kohl’s and Target until recently. The popular trend is now finding it’s way into clothing for the fall and winter.
“I usually think peplum shirts are cute and sometimes dresses, but that depends on the rest of the dress,” Ellie Pruett-Fiederlein said.
Peplum originates all the way back to the 1930-1940s, and also found it’s way back into fashion in the 1980s. The current peplum trend is a little bit different than that in the 1980s. Peplum now is currently more geometric and angular looking. Instead of ruffles, the peplum consists of triangular pieces of fabric that sit around the waist of the garment. Peplum ruffles are still common as well.
The peplum trend hasn’t found it’s way into Harrisonburg High School yet, but it will probably be popping up soon in small amounts.
“[Peplum] is not personally my favorite style, but it depends on who is wearing it. I don’t actually own any tops or dresses that have peplum,” Hannah Purcell said.
During the colder months, the small ruffles won’t be seen much, except on the occasional dress. However, once the spring months roll around, there is a sure chance that the clothing racks at stores will be filled with the uprising trend.
