Sophomore Juju Butler and senior Atilia Thomas go up to block during the Streaks’ loss against Stuarts Draft on Tuesday.

The varsity volleyball team traveled to Stuarts Draft High School on Aug. 27 to face the Cougars in their first away game of the season. The Streaks won the first set 25-19, but dropped the consecutive three 18-25, 24-26 and 19-25 to lose the match 3-1. Throughout the game, the team struggled with coming back from deficits after the other team would score multiple points in a row. Sophomore Jay Garcia had six kills and senior Abby McCollum had nine digs to end the match.

The Streaks took the first set 25-19. In the second set, the Cougars came out with an early lead. Senior Atilia Thomas showed promise for the Streaks by rewarding them with two consecutive aces, but it was not enough as they lost that set 18-25.

Junior Sophie Sallah started the third set with an ace putting the Streaks in the lead, followed by a block by junior Amelia Mitchell. Sophomore Maya Waid then served two consecutive aces to put the Streaks back in the lead. A large, loud Stuarts Draft student section added tension and excitement on both sides of the net. Losing this set 24-26, the Streaks picked up their heads for one more try to even up the score.

One kill apiece by Garcia and Waid started the fourth set. Throughout the fourth set, Mitchell had two blocks, Waid slapped down a strong cross-court hit and McCollum picked up several digs. The set ended with a score of 19-25 in favor of Stuarts Draft, with the Streaks ultimately losing the match 3-1.
