Senior Michael Sy plans to return to the HHS Tennis team as the assistant coach to help the team in the years to come. Sy has various new components to build a better team next year.

“I feel like this year no one was disciplined very well,” Sy said. “[I feel] I can bring a sense of discipline to the team without being too hard and still having the team respect me. [The team] could also work a lot on conditioning.”

Growing up in Germany and only moving to the United States in his junior year, Sy picked up some coaching tactics he feels he can make apparent through assistant coaching for the tennis team.

“[In Germany] we wouldn’t have practices at all like the way we do now,” Sy said. “We would work in small groups like three to four and take turns practicing one on one with the coach. We would rarely just rally for practices without taking some time to do conditioning [and or] practicing with the coach. [I believe] I can help out next year and use the small groups tactic because we will have two coaches, [Math teacher Erin Nafziger and I.]”

Math teacher Erin Nafziger feels Sy will come along great as an assistant coach

“Sy has a great rapport with everyone on the team and everyone feels [the] same about him,” Nafziger said. “He always brings energy to the team and motivates everyone to do better.”

HHS graduate and current assistant coach Alex Osinkosky presumes Sy will make a great assistant coach.

“[I realized] that from my year of coaching, Sy has a lot left to learn, but I also do too so having somebody who really wants to make a commitment to the team is very important because coaches can coach for years before they believe they’re a good coach. I think Sy has a lot of determination for the team and he really wants to see the team change,” Osinkosky said.
