Spring play begins again

Samantha Little, Editor-in-Chief

This year’s Spring play, written and directed by librarian Bradley Walton, has begun its season and taken it to the stage in rehearsal. The original hourlong family-friendly production is entitled “The Further Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon” and runs off where the classic children’s tale “Hey Diddle Diddle” left off with the dish running away with the spoon.

“We have five completely separate stories that do not link together, but are told in the framework of a group of storytellers who are each telling their own story of what happens when the dish runs away with the spoon,” Walton said.

The possibilities include the dish and the spoon meeting a yeti in Nepal, working in a retail store, becoming spies, meeting the witch from Hansel and Gretel and working in a sushi restaurant while fighting bad sushi.

Walton began writing and directing the plays, which are a part of Stan Swartz’s drama program, 17 years ago when Swartz wanted to add a third full-length production to the yearly drama schedule. Swartz asked Walton to take the lead on it, knowing he had a minor in theatre and had an enthusiasm for it when Walton was one of his own students. Walton continues to look forward to his involvement with this play and spending time with the cast and crew.

“It’s usually a lot of fun. It’s fairly low key, low stress and everyone gets along with each other really well. It’s generally just a good time for everyone involved,” Walton said.

The performances will be held on Friday Apr. 28 at 7 p.m. and Saturday Apr. 9 at 3 p.m. in the auditorium.
