Senior Jose Gonzalez-Cavazos passes a through ball to sophomore Lagos

The boys varsity soccer team competed in a home match against Sherando High School on Tuesday, March 22,. The captains leading the team on the field were Treyvon Medley-Green and Juan Perez. Sherando started with the ball at the 7:30 kickoff.

No goals were scored in the first half, with both team’s defenses keeping them out of the box and out of shooting range. HHS and Sherando had a few good runs and attempts on goal, but neither team could get a clear shot on goal. Junior Toby Campbell, goalie, thought the team did okay in the first half, but played better in the second half.

“I think I did alright. I didn’t do so well in the first half, but then I had a talk with the coaches and they told me what I did wrong, so I fixed it. I think we did well possessing that ball, and [having] overall control of the field,” Campbell said.

In the second half, HHS was able to get a few more runs going that gave them a few more shots on goal. Twenty-three minutes into the second half, sophomore striker Mario Lagos, shot a hard ball in the lower corner of the net off a deflected ball from Sherando’s goalie. This put HHS up 1-0 with 17 minutes left to play in the game.

“I got pretty hype [when Mario scored that goal,]” Campbell said.

With 13 seconds left on the clock, Sherando offense got on a fast break past the defensive line, where they got a shot in the net to score a goal. Sherando tied the game at 1-1, with a few seconds left to play.

“I shouldn’t have let that [goal go in]. How are we going to do in overtime? Are we going to come back and win,” Campbell said.

Overtime consisted of two 5-minute halves, where neither team scored, ending the game at a 1-1 draw. Campbell was a little disappointed at the end of the game.

“I felt like we could have at least scored three times. I know we could have,” Campbell said.
