Space is a fascinating place, and humans have always wanted to explore and find out more and more information about this other world. In the movie The Martian, Matt Damon plays the role of Mark Watney. Watney is among some of the first humans to reach the planet Mars. During the process of gathering information on the planet, a storm comes through that forces the team to leave. As the storm rolls in, Watney is hit with a piece of debris from the ship and blown away. The rest of the crew are required to leave without him.

The Struggle for Watney to stay alive on the barren planet is a great story line, once one problem is fixed there is an even worse problem about to start. Having to overcome all of this is what makes this such a good movie. Damon’s role as Mark Watney was one to remember. There are countless space exploration related movies that failed to succeed in the movie business, but this movie could have a chance to be in my top 10. Damon does a great job of adding a little humor in such dull moments throughout the movie. There were certain times in the movie where I wasn’t sure what was going on because of all the scientific talk used, but it is not that way through the whole movie. The movie isn’t all about how to get Watney home, there is also the conflict of NASA leaving a man behind. This is a big uh-oh on their part. The challenge is now even more complex now that NASA needs to keep the public calm.

Overall, this was a solid movie with lots of surprising moments and an excellent story line. If I were to rate it on a five star scale, I would give it four stars. It wasn’t great enough to be perfect, but it was a good movie and I would recommend seeing it.
