One of the downsides of cross country is the fragility of the athletes. Unlike some other sports where skill is mostly needed, runners require raw physical ability to be at the top of their game. At the Oatlands invitational this past Saturday, three out of HHS’ top five runners were out with sickness or injury.
Top runner senior Keith Thomas was out with a viral infection, and juniors Nevin Heckman and Erik Garcia were out with colds.
“I haven’t even been to school in a couple of days, I haven’t been running,” Thomas said, “at least it’s only Oatlands, it would be bad if this were post-season.”
Junior Erik Garcia missed nearly an entire week of practice, and two meets while out with a cold.
“I wish I was running, I missed some school this week because I was sick. I heard Oatlands is a good race,” Garcia said.
The only two runners in the top five on HHS’ team to run were sophomore Jonas Zimmerman, who finished 6th in the JV race of the meet, and sophomore Jordan Leaman, who finished 40th in the same race. The team decided not to field a varsity team for the race, due to the depletion of the team’s top runners.
