Although spring sports have just begun, Harrisonburg High School’s competition cheerleading team is also practicing during open gyms held at HHS by their coach Bridget Smith. The open gyms are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and last for an hour. The athletes set up mats in the multi-purpose room and begin with stretching, lunges, crunches, push-ups, and other exercises to condition their arms, legs, and abs. After they finish, the team works on jumps and stunts.
“[Open gyms] help prepare me for the season,” sophomore Evan Wetsel said.
Both the team and the coaches are hoping to improve their skills and are looking forward to the cheerleading competitions next year.
