Opinion: Taylor Swift's new single deserves some credit

Taylor Swift’s new single, “Shake It Off”, made me want to throw up the first time I heard it. Maybe it’s because I don’t like Taylor Swift to begin with, or maybe the poppy beat and annoying cacophony called singing really was too much to bear.

However, when I saw the video, and actually listened to the lyrics of the song, it somewhat humored me. The entire song and video is Swift making fun of herself. Everyone says she cannot dance, has no beat, has too many boyfriends; we’ve all heard it, and apparently so has she. But rather than being offended or changing her ways, she herself joined in.

In the beginning of the video, she is surrounded by professional dancers of many different dance genres and tries to fit in (obviously not being able to); but as the video continues, she is surrounded with more and more everyday people, who, like her, don’t have the best moves.

It’s somewhat of a humbling video; although everyday people are the ones making fun of her for not being able to dance, a small percentage of us can dance well either.

Also, when she performed the single for the first time at the VMA’s, she performed with about twenty back-up dancers, all men, to play the whole ‘too many men in her life’ card. She continued to dance badly throughout other performances in the VMA’s, appearing not to care about the negative media surrounding her. It was hilarious.

I have to admit, this made me like her a lot more. I gained some respect for her, in the fact that she has enough confidence to take the things she is known badly for, and then further exaggerate those things to the whole world.

Maybe Swift will continue to grow on me, but let’s be real- she probably won’t. I’ll give her credit for this one though.
