App of the Week: Hemingway teaches you how to write

Rafael Snell-Feikema, Online Editor-in-Chief

He was a young man who wrote alone in an English class and he had gone eighty-four days now without writing a good essay. In the first forty days his teacher had been with him. But after forty days the teacher’s confidence in the young man grew thin.

He was a terrible writer.

But there was hope. The magic of the internet presented to the young man the opportunity to write well. It gave him a wondrous app: Hemingway. The app tutored him in the ways of the greats. It told him how to write like someone who has been on a series of safaris. It demanded that he write in short, powerful sentences without confusing structures. It illuminated to him the simple fact that adverbs are the devil.
He learned from its colors and he wrote now with more fluidity. His sentences were no longer such a twisted web of verbs and modifiers; he could write!

And all of it was Hemingway.
