Athletes hit the track on Mar. 3 with the beginning of the 2014 outdoor season. Practices run every day, Monday through Friday, from 3:13pm to between 5-6pm. In order to participate on the outdoor track team, students must have a VHSL physical form filled out and turned into the athletic office.Coach David Loughran says that students should be ready to work on the first day.

“[There will be] A heavy dose of training, weights, and core,” Coach Loughran said.

Junior Laurie Serrell has been on the outdoor track team since her freshman year. She has a good understanding on how the first couple practices will be run.

“Usually the first couple or so practices are tests to see how fast you run so they can put you in the races that best fit you,” Serrell said. Coach Loughran also says that during the practices before meets startup there will be supplementals along with the heavy doses of training, weights, and core. The supplementals are strengthening and speed exercises that focus on building leg muscle and fast twitch muscle memory.

Coach Loughran’s goals for the team this season are to win the conference tournament as a team, qualify in all relays and 20 individuals for the state meet. Support the track team at their first meet at the Woodberry Forest Invitational on Saturday April 5.
