HHS track team sprints to states
February 26, 2014
True Blue Track & Field took to the ovals and runways of Liberty University’s Tolsma Indoor Facility this past weekend in the inaugural Region 4A North Meet. The girls team continued their post-season success with an outstanding 3rd place finish in the event with 49 points. Highlights (and state qualifiers) for both teams came early and often, and continued throughout.
The first gun shot of the day belonged to the girls 4×800 team of junior Laurie Serrell, senior Celia Ehrenpreis and juniors Nicole Downey and Brenna Cowardin, who took their 5th seed up a spot to a 4th place finish in an HHS #4 All-time with 10:19.62, marking the relays first entry since 2009
Around the same time, senior John Weiss was high jumping his way to a state qualification, with a 6th place at 5-8.
The short-sprint Streaks took the momentum from there. Sophomore hurdler Olivia Yutzy, and juniors Brooke Cobb, and Tim Zepp all made the 8-lane finals. Yutzy and Cobb finished 3rd and 4th respectively, with HHS #3 and #4 All-times 9.11 and 9.24 respectively. Zepp went from 8th to 6th in the finals, running a season best 8.63. Juniors Mikaila Williams and Camille Cummings would not be outdone in the 55 dash, finishing 3rd and 4th, with times of 7.60 (HHS #4 all-time) and 7.66
The turn-around for three of them was short, as the Girls 4×200 was the next event, where the team of Faith Runnells, Cummings, Yutzy, and WIlliams would finish 3rd in an HHS #4 all-time 1:50.86
Things settled for a short while, then five more girls advanced in the field events in the blink of an eye. Senior shot-putter Rebekah Good, who had already thrown an auto-qualifier, finished (a disappointed) runner up (with a bum shoulder) in 36-2. Around the same time, in one of the big booms of the day, Cobb (3rd – 33-5.5 – HHS #3 all-time), Williams (4th – 33-5), juniors Faith Runnells (5th – 32-2), and Rosanni Lake (6th – 31-11) would all qualify for next weekends meet in the triple jump.
Sophomore Abrahm Amine, our Eritrean Streak, PRd in an HHS #5 all-time 10:19.01 for 4th place in the two mile, far out-running his 10th place seed.
In the final event of the day, another number ten seed, the boys 4×400 relay of Weiss, sophomore Devin Medley, senior Chris MacAdam, and junior Isaiah Hartzler, ran 3:41.60 for 5th place.
Including alternates, HHS took 13 girls and 10 boys to the region meet on saturday. All 13 of the girls and 8 of the 10 boys will be traveling down to Lynchburg for next Friday & Saturday’s State 4A Indoor Championship Meet at Liberty University.
