Review: Captain Phillips is a film for the whole family
January 24, 2014
Instead of paying $25-50 dollars to go see a movie in your local movie theatre, consider saving a few bucks by renting out the recently released movie on DVD, Captain Phillips. Based on a true story, this movie tells the story of Richard Phillips, a sea captain who takes command of an unarmed cargo ship that is set to take a course through the Gulf of Aden around the Horn of Africa. It is in this that the man who has known nothing but travel all of his life is quickly brought to the cruel realities of life he finds himself trying to outrun armed pirates traveling in two skiffs threatening to board the ship. This story shows the captain’s struggle to ensure the safety of his crew, the ship and all of its cargo all while fighting for his life and desiring nothing more but to be home with his family.
If you are looking for a movie that your whole family will enjoy, this movie is for you. It will not only keep you on the very edge of your seat for the entire two hours, but expresses the morals of love, family, and the selflessness of a captain at the mercy of pirates. Due to the few graphic scenes and the overwhelming amount of pressure death has on the story overall I would not recommend this film for anyone under the age of 13. With that being said, I know that I will personally be adding this movie to my collection as well as looking forward to seeing it a second time in the near future.
