Sports have been back in session for a while now that we’re fully into the new school year. One of these sports is JV Sideline Cheer.
Freshman Lyd Brett has been cheering since last December. He’d been doing basketball sideline and is now doing JV Sideline Cheer.
“[I joined cheer] because my friends were doing it, and then I kind of fell in love with it, so I started doing competition cheer and football sideline,” Brett said.
Brett is team captain for sideline cheer and enjoys it.
“[I’m most excited for] the game before Halloween. I’m excited to hang out and maybe pass out candy,” Brett said.
Brett thinks the season has gone well so far and loves the community in cheer.
Jenn Garst coaches JV Sideline cheer and is excited to watch the students progress during this season.
“My favorite part about coaching JV is the excitement and progression each athlete holds. Throughout the season, I watch athletes transform from new, unsure individuals to confident, skilled athletes, and in some cases being ready to move up to the varsity level next season. All of my athletes become extended family like children of my own. Watching them grow throughout the program really is what brings my heart so much joy,” Garst said.
Garst is optimistic for the future of the team and their potential.
“This season, we have a lot of middle school athletes on our team with a few freshmen sprinkled in. They’ve progressed into a uniformed, polished squad. Our JV team is truly a special group of hardworking athletes. The future for our cheer program looks very bright because of them,” Garst said.
Garst is excited to watch the progression in skill sets and confidence.
“Sickness & injury have been the biggest challenges for us this season. The team has remained focused and pushed through every obstacle placed in front of them. I truly couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them,” Garst said.
