The Fine Arts programs in Harrisonburg High School and Rocktown High School are starting a creative arts academy called SPARK, an innovative and inspiring new program. J.R Snow, the Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts in Harrisonburg City Schools is one of the leaders of this program.
“SPARK isn’t an acronym, but instead a word that hopefully emulates the creative spark in each student,” Snow said.
Snow had run the Fine Arts Academy here at HHS, which is sadly coming to a conclusion after this year. SPARK hopes to continue what the old academy started.
“With the opening of Roctown High School, the current Fine Arts Academy program will end. The SPARK Creative Arts Academy is a renewing of the principles and objectives, but in a new and different program for students,” Snow said.
This academy intends to not just support artistic talents but help students grow in ways they never imagined.
“SPARK is a unique opportunity exclusively available to students enrolled in creative arts classes at Harrisonburg and Rocktown High School. This academy focuses on creative exploration, interdisciplinary learning, and community connections in the creative arts. Students will engage in a variety of creative learning experiences throughout the year,” Snow said.
With hopes to help students who may want to pursue arts as a career in the future, Snow hopes SPARK inspires students.
“Our hope is by meeting local artists and understanding how arts engagement looks like in our community, students will take the opportunity to see themselves in arts after high school,” Snow said.
