On Wednesday, April 11, Intro to Healthcare had the firefighters from the Harrisonburg Fire Department come and talk to them about careers and teach them how to use a fire extinguisher. Fire safety is part of the curriculum that you have to teach in Intro to Healthcare. It also teaches them about the career to be a firefighter, since they still have a lot of time to figure out what they want to do in the future. Jennifer Glazer is the Introduction to Healthcare and Medical Terminology teacher here at HHS.
“Every time the favorite part [of this activity] is getting to actually use the fire extinguisher and the fact that they always get candy with them and answer questions while we are there because they get candy too,” Glazer said.
When they did the fire simulation, they didn’t use real fire. Freshman Eva Aguilera is also a student in Intro to Healthcare.
“I think it was so cool how they had the fire simulation since it wasn’t real fire and I like the fact that they let us use the fire extinguishers,” Aguilera said.
Being a firefighter is an important job to the students and they believe it goes hand in hand with healthcare. This workshop opens new ideas for students and their future. Freshman Mariah Nelson is in Intro to Healthcare and she did the workshop.
“My favorite part was going outside and doing the extinguisher and learning about the different careers,” Nelson said.
