Review: Macado’s neither wows nor disappoints

Despite lacking in other areas, Macado’s can be praised for their large portions.

Does anyone remember the restaurant downtown named Spanky’s? If so, Harrisonburg now has its brother company– Macado’s. Macado’s is a bar and grill, but specifically known for its larger than life sandwiches.

I was extremely excited to try Macado’s because of all the hype surrounding their arrival in the ‘burg. I guess I wasn’t aware of how popular a restaurant it was, but either way it was definitely a cool experience going.

The atmosphere of the place is awesome. There was posters, plaques, and pictures covering the walls. Not to mention they had an Elvis Presley statue type figure, along with a huge JMU Duke Dog when you first enter, which I certainly liked. The facility seemed clean and very up to par for a Friday night out with your friends, or even just lunch with your family.

The menu is gigantic. It can almost be a little intimidating if it’s your first time going (like myself) because it can be hard deciding on what to get. I chose a bacon cheese burger with an appetizer of boneless wings, while my friend ordered a ‘build your own sandwich’ type deal. The service was quick and the staff are kind and helpful. We didn’t wait long at all for our food.

Maybe if I would’ve gotten one of their specialty sandwiches or clubs I would feel differently, but Macado’s is basically your typical sit down restaurant. There wasn’t anything spectacular about my food or my friend’s sandwich (I had to try it). The one thing I will add is that their portions will, without a doubt, make you full. They stack your basket with crinkle cut fries, and all the sandwiches are pretty large. Overall, the atmosphere is fun, isn’t boring, has great service, but is just your average restaurant. 6/10
