On Monday, December 9th, the Boys varsity basketball team fell short to Page County 59-60 in a game that came down to the final second with Page County beating the buzzer and hitting a game winning three. Junior Guy Von-Schuch describes the team performance.
“As a team we played pretty well, we stuck together the whole time. We missed a couple free throws, but it came down to the last play and they hit a lucky shot. We were winning for most of the game so it just really sucked to lose like that,” Von-Schuch said.
Monday’s game was the second contest between the teams, following a loss to Page County earlier in the season, adjustments were made. Sophomore Hazhir Qadir explains the improvements the team made since their first meeting with Page County.
“This game we actually played defense and focused on not fouling out, so an all around improvement for us,” Qadir said.
Harrisonburg’s lead was cut down in the fourth quarter, setting the scene for Page County’s buzzer beating three. Senior Lazaro Valdivia details the moment the shot went in.
“I thought it was going to Overtime, but I looked up and checked the scoreboard. We were down one, and it was game, so I was really upset,” Valdivia said.
The team looks to learn from the loss and improve on mistakes made during the game in practice.
“We were missing a lot of layups and free throws, that’s what killed us, so we just have to work on that today in practice,” Valdivia said.
The team will travel to Western Albemarle today, December 11th, to take on the 1-2 Western Albemarle Warriors. Harrisonburg looks to regain focus and work together as a team to come out with their first victory of the season. Von-Schuch explains the team’s gameplan.
“We’re hoping to definitely swing the ball a lot and get some open shots, and outside shots should hopefully start falling,” Von Schuch said.
Harrisonburg keeps high hopes for the season, despite starting out 0-3. Valdivia describes his goals for the rest of the season.
“I really want to go far in the playoffs, and win the district championship again,” Valdivia said.
