Review: Bangerz has great vocals but fair share of lows
Miley Cyrus has recently been in the news for her eccentric and questionable behavior, but between the skimpy outfits and twerking Cyrus has found time to release a fourth album. Bangerz is okay . It’s great to sing along to and sometimes you can’t help but find yourself swaying along to the beat. felt that Cyrus’s strong points were generally during her love/heartbreak songs. It has its highs and it definitely has its fair share of lows.

Bangerz is very different from Cyrus’s previous albums both lyrically and musically. Bangerz has the recurring themes of love, heartbreak, partying, and a general not caring of what others think. Gone are the times of when Cyrus was singing about having a crush on someone. Now she singing about taking someone to bed. I respect that she is an adult and is allowed to grow beyond her “Hannah Montana” days, and she certainly has.
“Adore You”, the first song off the album, was a great first song for the album to begin with. The song talks about loving someone and wanting to be around them, and I was singing along by the end of the song. The top 40 hits, “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” both are strong songs with “We Can’t Stop” being one of the only party songs off the album that isn’t totally obnoxious. “Wrecking Ball” really showcases Cyrus’s vocal talent and is arguably the best song off the album. Say what you want about Miley, but the girl can sing.
“#GetItRight” talks about how much she wants to be in bed with her significant other, it’s one of the more upbeat non-party songs. It belongs on the radio, but overall is pretty weak and really repetitive. I also see no use for the hashtag, “#Let’sNot”. “Drive” is an emotionally driven song that incorporates dubstep and talks about heartbreak and missing someone. “Drive” had meaningful lyrics and a sick beat, I really liked it. “Maybe You’re Right” sounds close to what Miley Cyrus would put out in her Hannah Montana days, it was okay, just one of the more boring songs off the album.
Bangerz has a lot of guest artists from big names, like Britney Spears, to lesser known artists, like Future. Most of the albums worst songs are the ones featuring guest artists. For example, the song “SMS (Bangerz)” featuring Britney Spears, from which the album takes it’s name from, is a cringe-inducing song that just has Cyrus repeating the word “Bangerz” over a weird beat. I’m still not sure what that song was about or what a banger is. ”Love, Money, Party” featuring Big Sean, was Cyrus’s attempt to be hardcore and street she half sings and raps along, the only redeeming part was Big Sean’s guest verse and even then the song was very shallow. “4×4” featuring Nelly, is Cyrus’s return to her country roots. In the song, she refers to herself as a female rebel and the song sounds like a sped up version of a hoedown and it’s just not very good.”My Darling” featuring Future is a sweet love song that juxtaposes Cyrus’s vocals with Future’s gruff vocals and somehow it works perfectly. “FU” featuring French Montana is a bluesy song with strong lyrics and vocals from Cyrus. The song what have been better without French Montana, but it’s still one of the album’s strengths.
Bangerz is a highly listenable album that incorporates a lot of techno. It is highly produced, but Cyrus really ties the whole album with her great vocals. There were moments on the album when Cyrus tried to hard to be something she wasn’t and it was blatantly obvious. Fans of her older stuff might not like Bangerz, but after listening to it a couple times, it will probably grow on them. Bangerz is insanely catchy, I just wish Cyrus would’ve had more solo songs.
