Helping students achieve their testing goals, the math honors society Mu Alpha Theta, is now offering Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) tutoring once a week.
A little less than an hour after school, room 424 is available to whoever is preparing to take the exam. Members of Mu Alpha Theta and one of its sponsors are available for tutoring and support.
“We just provide a space. If someone needs something explained, we can explain it to them, but usually we just provide this as a time for people to set aside and come here,” Senior and member of Mu Alpha Theta Cindy Liu said.
Mu Alpha Theta sponsor Hannah Leaman hosts the tutoring in her classroom.
“I don’t do anything that [Cindy Liu and Johanna Mayfield] don’t do. As a teacher, I’m just here to help organize the students who are receiving help, the students who are giving help, and to make sure that everybody is safe when they go home,” Leaman said. “I would also add that we provide help for signing up for the PSAT and ACT, so if you’re wondering: ‘When do I do that? How do I do that? What are the steps?’, we also provide that information.”
Their first meeting was Jan. 30, and with only one student consistently using the space, they are ready to welcome more. Liu offers encouragement to anyone who is planning to take the SAT or ACT this year.
“I say, just come. It’s a really good opportunity to study. If you’re not super motivated, definitely come, because then you might find the motivation to do something,” Liu said.
