Flip-flops are my lifeline. I pick them when I can not decide what shoes I want to wear that day or if I am rushing out the door with no time to look for another shoe. They make it extremely easy in those situations. On days when it is warm and the sun has just come out, they are perfect, but what happens when you realize, after you stepped out of the door of course, that your toes are literally freezing off!
That, my friends, has happened to me a lot this year. I run out the door thinking flip-flops will be okay (it can not be too cold outside, right?) and I step out into air so cold I can see my breath, and the wind is whispering for me to go back inside as it flies by my head.
I am getting extremely sick of this bizarre weather. One week it is warm, then the next it is rainy and chilly. It is March, so why in the world is it only 35 degrees and rainy some days!?
March is supposed to be a time when the sun pops out to say hello, when birds are chirping away, and spring is just around the corner. It is the time when you break out the skirts, shorts and “flip-flops” and put away all the frumpy things you wore for winter. But not this year. This year, knowing what the weather is going to be like is like trying to decipher a code every morning. It is ridiculous.
Snow and ice are pretty much the words that define this year’s weather. We have had record breaking snow this year. This, in turn, equals no time at all to wear flip-flops.
Although, I have worn them in the snow, I must say, it was definitely not one of my best ideas, and this is why.
As I was walking down the unnecessarily steep hill in the front of my house, I began to slide back in forth through the packed down ice. My feet slid out from under me and BAM, I landed straight into the 4 feet of snow we had been “blessed with” the week before. Not only did my flip-flops break from the fall, but when I was falling I tried to catch my self with my arms, and that was a big mistake. I had an “ice burn” from my wrist to my elbow for days. Now that, as you can imagine, was not fun.
Moral of my story, do not try to venture out in the snow wearing flip-flops. Take my mistake and learn from it. And if you are a flip-flop fanatic, like me, just wait until the last snow has disappeared and it is at least fifty degrees outside. Believe me; you will love wearing your flip-flops even more when that day comes.
