On a recent podcast created by two writers of the Daily News Record, both were quoted calling senior combo guard Seth Kardos “the best player in the Valley district.” In the last 8 games, Kardos has had six 20 point games, including a 29 point show against second place Fort Defiance. Can the Harrisonburg senior actually finish the season as the Player Of The Year? After the podcast host interviewed all seven coaches in the valley to see where they stand in player of the year voting, five of the seven coaches voted for Kardos. Kardos may not have the impressive stat line like Tucker McCoy, who is first place Spotswood’s leading scorer (19.4 ppg), or the Valley’s leading scorer Shai Matthews (23.5 ppg), but Kardos is putting up similar numbers. Something that puts him in front of the other candidates is that people believe he is doing more, with less. The Streaks do not have an awful basketball team, but Kardos does not have the help that McCoy and Matthews have in scoring, rebounding, etc. The Streaks average around five to six scorers a game, while most teams have eight to ten. The Streaks only have one other scorer who averaged double digits (Brian Rodriguez), whereas McCoy has four and Matthews has three. Most coaches would seem to take Kardos over the other candidates because he has a more complete package. He can score, rebound, steal, run, drive, shoot, or even post you up, anything that you want in a high school basketball player, Kardos seems to have.
