Word of Ernie G., the comedian from Los Angeles, spread like wildfire here at HHS. Everyone became excited that someone mildly popular would be coming to see them and get out of class. What a deal! Ernie G. was the topic of the entire day. I was excited too, of course, having bumped into him the previous day. But as he soon made his appearance on stage, the crowd burst into applause.
I found him to be quite entertaining. He came off as childish and composed, daring and powerful. Ernie G. could fill a room with laughter and then make it go quite for contemplation. He pokes fun at himself and even at the audience with such confidence and ease.
I was taken by his charm and wit, but I didn’t find myself too absorbed into what he was saying. He mainly made connections to Hispanic students who shared the same background and culture as him. I caught him rambling about Taco Trucks when he supposedly talking about stereotypes and identity. It is not like I was totally disconnected. I understood a majority of what he was talking about, even being a non-Hispanic student.
I did find what Ernie G. said about making good choices and going to college rather inspiring and powerful. I laughed along with the students at his stories of his childhood. But I didn’t feel a connection to me.
Overall, Ernie G. was a delight to see and the entire hour worth it. He was creative and thought-provoking, striking a new found respect for myself and others.
