The first home football game against TA was a great opener. Although Red Sea was a little small in the beginning, as it got closer to game time more and more students showed up to join the student section. The tailgate got everyone excited, featuring some death-defying stunts by junior Jacob Byrd and a great pump up speech by one of the Red Sea leaders senior Robby Ross. The Red Sea got loud in the stands, and eventually worked with both the band and the cheerleaders to support our players in cheers and different chants. We played, we cheered, we won. Happy ending.
But now, about a month down the road from that first game, we’re getting a little antsy. Most of us can’t drive, so the away games are out of the question, and those of us who can are faced with games at Handley or Millbrook that empty out our gas tanks, leaving us broke. We want to support our football players, and represent our school, but we’re left wallowing on couches and not knowing what to do with our Friday nights. Friday nights in the fall are for football games. It’s a known fact. So why is our next home game on October 5th? That’s over a month after our first home game.
This year we have an SCA President, senior Ben DiNapoli, who’s trying to get our school more spirited, we have cheerleaders posting signs and wishes of “good luck!” on lockers and walls around the school, we even have new Red Sea gear like beanies.
I know that we don’t have control over the football schedule, and that keeping the students of HHS entertained and spirited isn’t really a high priority on the people-who-are-in-charge’s list, but for those of us who live, eat and breathe football in the fall, it’s quite a let down.
