Seven indoor track athletes advance to state meet
February 21, 2022
Senior Shan Auguste competed in the regional track meet Feb. 14. Auguste qualified for states and is preparing to compete on Feb. 19.
“I just had to focus and chase what I wanted for myself,” Auguste said.
Auguste has been training with the track team since November. Auguste’s teammate senior Tay Chacon has been one of his biggest competitors and has caused him to push himself over the course of the season
“[Tay] is the fastest one on the team and I feel like in order for me to become the fastest one on the team, I have to try and beat him so that pushed me more and more,” Auguste said.
Auguste competes in multiple events for track and field.
“I run the 4×2 and 4×4 [relays], and I do long and triple jump. For triple jump, [my personal record] is 42.3 units and for long jump it’s 19.95 units,” Auguste said.
Auguste only has a short time to prepare for states, but is determined to continue to train with the team as well as by himself before the weekend.
“[I’ll work with] the team and sometimes I’ll probably go to the gym and work on my legs,” Auguste said. “I’m going to try and build up my endurance and focus more on jumping farther, so I can maybe get a ring at state.”
In addition to Auguste, other members of the track team also qualified for the state meet.
