Senior Emmett Copeland is making his directorial debut at the First Annual Spring Arts Festival. His play Linda Her, by Harry Kondoleon, details the nervous breakdown of housewife Carol while her family is on a vacation. Senior Lindsey Carpenter, who plays Carol, find the role both interesting and challenging.
“It is really cool to be a character with so much power behind her,” Carpenter says. “I feel drained after playing her.”
Carpenter, who has only acted in one high school show, finds the stage a difficult transition from forensics, where she shined in the category of Dramatic Interpretation.
“I am used to being in a small space and only having to act to a few judges. Now I have all this room and a huge audience,” Carpenter explained.
Both Carpenter and Copeland categorize the show as a “dramedy.” Copeland experienced difficulty in finding a play for the festival. His first choice was rejected. Afterwards, he spent weeks upon weeks searching for the perfect piece, but none seemed to live up to his standards. But Copeland feels happy with his choice of Linda Her.
“I felt it was deeper than a lot of the others I looked at,” Copeland said.
Directing his peers has been an enjoyable experience for Copeland. When not in practice, his group hangs out and enjoys themselves. Yet at the same time, they are able to work together and take direction.
“They have been really respectful of my authority as a director,” Copeland said.
Linda Her will be one of four other plays at tonight’s Spring Arts Festival. The program begins at 7:30 in the HHS auditorium. There is no charge for tickets, but donations are accepted.
